How the conversion works

Mass-fraction units

1% = 10,000 ppm, and 1 ppm = 1,000 ppb. These relationships are exact when the units describe the same mass-fraction basis.

Mass per liquid volume

mg/L is converted to ppm using solution density: ppm = mg/L ÷ density in kg/L. At exactly 1.000 kg/L, 1 mg/L equals 1 ppm.

Frequently asked questions

Are ppm and mg/L always equal?

No. They are numerically equal only when the liquid density is exactly 1.000 kg/L and the concentration bases match. The approximation is often reasonable for very dilute water solutions, but not for every product.

Can I use this result to decide how much chemical to add?

No. The result converts units only. Product dose, target concentration, contact time and application method must come from an authoritative label or protocol.

Why does density matter?

ppm is commonly a mass fraction, while mg/L is mass per volume. Density connects the mass of one litre of solution to its volume.
